FOR DESIGNERS JUST STARTING OR LAUNCHING THEIR BUSINESS

6 Weeks of Step-By-Step Guidance, Expert Support, and Insider Industry Knowledge to Help You Start Your Interior Design Business with Confidence.

Tired of endless Google searches and building your business on the fly?

I TOTALLY GET IT.

You want to run a successful design business, but you either have no idea where to start or feel like you’re in react mode, building the plane as you fly it. NOT GOOD!

You have a natural talent for design, but the business side of things feels like a foreign language. Heck, you may even be wondering if you’re cut out for this.

Spoiler Alert: It Doesn’t Have To Be This Hard.

I BET YOU’RE READY TO STOP….

Relying on the internet for answers.

You’re frantically searching the internet for solutions that may or may not work, making your head spin with information overload. Just once, you’d love to know exactly what to do and how to do it, and you need it in one easy-to-access place.

Second-guessing your every decision.

As much as you want to build your business, you’re stuck second-guessing every little thing. You have an eye for design, but that no longer feels like enough, and the confidence you’re craving feels so out of reach.

Feeling like a fraud in the interior design business game.

You’re already struggling to keep up with all the industry lingo, and now you’re trying to stay on top of a business too. You’re piecemealing it together as you go, praying your vendors and clients won’t see through the cracks.

Drowning in a sea of information overload.

You’re trying to figure out all of the things, leaving you feeling exhausted and spread waaaay too thin. The goal is to build your dream business—but the more you learn, the more you realize you don’t know.

Racing against the clock to “get it right.”

You may be getting by—for now—but aren’t sure how much longer you can keep holding it all together. Your pipeline is starting to fill up, and you know you need to get things in place before you’re in way over your head.

You’re done waiting for the other shoe to drop.

✓ Stop guessing and get the answers you need.

✓ Save the time it takes to do this on your own.

✓ Steer clear of common (and costly) mistakes.

✓ Step into a legitimate interior design business.

✓ Show up like you’ve been in the biz for years.

✓ Feel confident taking on new clients and projects.

✓ Have someone IN the industry put their eyes on your business!

If I know you like I think I do, I bet you’re ready to:

It’s Time to Let You in On a Little Secret…

YOU DON’T HAVE TO FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT!

You can have the interior design business you’ve been dreaming of — without all of the stress and second-guessing. Imagine knowing you’re building a strong business foundation rooted in best practices while getting expert advice, insider industry tips, AND support from me and my team every step of the way!

client experience

“Starting your own firm in the Interior Design world is exciting and daunting. It isn't a 'one size fits all' field and that is part of what makes it so great, but can be overwhelming when trying to navigate how to structure your business, charge clients, keep processes clear, etc. I was feeling like I was doggy paddling in a few areas and needed someone to help me get back to swimming along and Katie did just that! She helped answer questions and give suggestions that I could follow instead of drowning in general business advice!”

DANNI, INTERIOR DESIGNER

MEET YOUR MENTORS

Hey there! I’m Katie

Real talk. Being your own boss sounds fun and all, but it can be really hard—especially if everyone thinks your business is just a cute hobby....

And if you’re anything like me, you want to show up like a professional from day one.

I remember the immense dread I felt when meeting with clients and vendors when I was just starting my first business. I worked hard to appear calm, cool, and collected, but on the inside, I was worried they would stump me with a question and expose me as a newbie. Maybe you can relate. Or perhaps this is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.

Either way, know this: it doesn’t have to be that way. You can skip the stress of figuring it out as you go by building a solid business foundation now, allowing for sustainable growth for all the years ahead. I created this program because I believe every designer deserves to start their dream business with confidence, even if they’re just starting out. Even if they haven’t gone to design school. Even if they haven’t worked in a design studio. I don’t want the business side of things to hold passionate and talented designers, like you, back from their dreams. And I definitely don’t want the world to miss out on your incredible talents.

Say hello to Gloria!

When it comes to design business foundations, Gloria is my right-hand lady! As a former interior designer and current professor of interior design at a Midwest university, Gloria brings years of in-the-field expertise and a teacher’s eye to the program. She has experience in both residential and commercial design, so there’s literally nothing she hasn’t seen.

Oh–and did I mention that she also has her Master’s Degree in interior design from SCAD (aka Ivy League in the design world) and a Ph.D.? In other words—She. Knows. Her. Stuff.

And if you’ve found any of our free resources and blogs helpful in the past, you can thank Gloria. She contributes to all of the educational resources we create for our designers.

And with Design Business Foundations, she gets to be directly involved in your success. While this program is structured to teach business foundations, not design foundations, Gloria is certainly an invaluable asset. Having access to her industry expertise puts you on the fast track to success, just like if you had spent years working in a bustling interior design office or attending design school. Ummm… yes, please!

Consider this program your fast track to knowing how the inside of a design business works so you can feel like you’ve been “in” the biz for years.

I get it—establishing the foundation isn’t as fun or sexy as doing the design itself.

But unwavering confidence and a successful business?

Now THAT is sexy as hell.

…imagine what you could be saying after 6 weeks?

HAVE QUESTIONS?

Let’s get them answered.

  • Sure—how much time do you have?

While there’s a lot of great information out there, it can take countless hours to sift through it all. Even then, how do you know which information is legit? When you’re new to the business game, you don’t want to risk getting the wrong advice and looking like a total amateur—or worse, having to spend more time (and money) fixing it later.

This program was created by an expert in the interior design industry, who has experience setting up and running multiple successful businesses, and who has worked with interior design specific attorneys, accountants, and consultants to clean up the messes that were a result of companies not being established properly from day one. This isn’t just a bunch of information piecemealed together. It’s a carefully curated step-by-step program created with the interior design industry in mind.

In each lesson, my team and I share pro tips and industry insights so you know the what, the why, and the how so you can avoid costly mistakes that my 1:1 clients pay me, my team, attorneys, and accountants thousands of dollars to fix.

Plus, you’ll have six weeks of access to us during our Office Hours, which are held Fridays from 10-3 central time. Simply respond to your weekly lesson email and let us know your question. You’ll have a response in your inbox on Friday.

We've laid out the necessary steps in the order we recommend executing them, so you can simply follow along, cross each item off as you go, and finish with a solid foundation for your company. Everything we've included is intentional and based on what has been successful for our clients OR conversely, what has caused major issues for our clients and their business structures, so must be avoided.

Oh, and following the Design Business Foundations curriculum means your design business will look and feel LEGIT from the moment you launch. No more “Why do I keep attracting clients who don't want to pay my fee?”

  • Whether you attended design school or not, if you are looking forward to starting your business, are in the process of starting your business, or are already a few years in, this will be a great fit to help you solidify the critical foundational elements of your company.

We’ve worked with countless new designers who’ve admitted that it’s often their finances, software, vendor accounts, and marketing that they can’t seem to figure out. Simple tips and insights have been “the thing” that allowed them to unlock greater profits and feel more confident in working with the right fit clients. And we want that for you too.

It’s imperative to ensure all of these elements are aligned with the type of business you want to run. And if those elements aren’t established at all, that’s 1000% where you need to start. Don’t worry—Design Business Foundations will walk you through the exact steps to build your business on solid footing.

  • Short answer: Whenever you need it to!

Long answer: This program has an ongoing enrollment, meaning you can access the curriculum, resources, and 6-weeks of support whenever you’re ready to sign up. While the program is set up to follow a 6-week format, it’s 100% self-paced. You’ll receive access to everything right when you join and you can choose to go through it one week at a time or dive into it all at once.

Either way, once you join, you’ll receive a weekly email from us for 6 weeks, inviting you to ask questions and get support during our Office Hours, which we hold every Friday from 10-3 CST.

  • The Design Business Foundations curriculum is accessible via our course platform. Instantly access all the materials and bonus resources so you can work through them whenever it works best for you.

However, you also have access to 6 weeks of expert support starting the day you join the program. During that time, you'll receive the weekly lesson by email walking you through each topic so you can proceed one step at a time with additional guidance from us. The weekly email will also provide an opportunity to ask questions and get support on that week’s specific topic, so you’ll have my team in your back pocket for six weeks. That means you have access to:

-An interior design business consultant (me!)

-An interior design professor and former interior designer

    -A Dubsado and CRM specialist

-A PR consultant and expert marketer

    -A tech and Asana specialist

You’ll get responses to your questions during our Office Hours, which are held via email each Friday from 10-3 CST.

You’ll also receive a printable two-page Getting Started Checklist so you can physically cross each task off your to-do list as you complete it.

  • First and foremost, you need a desire to build your interior design business professionally from day one while dodging any expensive or rookie mistakes. Other than that, you need an email account to receive your materials and to access six weekly support emails. You’ll also want to set up a free Google Drive account if you don’t already have one. As for everything else? We’ll teach you what you need to know along the way.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what you want to invest in as you build your business. However, we will suggest software programs that will make you efficient from day one, so you’ll know exactly what we recommend (and what top design firms across the US and Canada use). You’ll be ready to sign up for the right platform when the time is right.

  • The Design Business Foundations program will help you establish the foundation of your business; we don’t cover the principles of design. This means, we won’t be teaching you how to create floor plans, renderings, or elevations, how to make design selections, how to project manage, or how to design an elevated client experience.

However, if you are interested in learning more about design itself, we invite you to join our email list for updates on workshops and resources that cover those topics.

That said, in this program, we do share information such as what software programs we recommend for designers, so you can at least have a system that supports your creative work.

  • The Foundations program is geared toward brand new designers who are just starting or launching their business. We lay the foundation for taking on projects, but don’t dive into specifically what you should charge per hour or per project.

We share our suggestions for how new designers SHOULD structure their services in the beginning (and we also share some sample scopes of work so you don’t miss anything!) but typically pricing rules don’t fully apply when you’re taking on your first and second clients.

If you are already working with clients and need help with pricing your projects and creating the processes for a streamlined delivery, then our Designed to Scale Method program will be a better fit.

  • While the legal and tax requirements differ slightly in every state and country, we have formulated the Design Business Foundations program to apply to designers outside of the US as well.

However, please remember the material and information provided is this program should not be construed as and is not intended to constitute financial, legal, or tax advice. We cannot guarantee the sufficiency, completeness, or accuracy of any information or documents as they relate to your specific tax, legal, or accounting needs.

  • Yes! We formally update our products twice yearly, and whenever there are updates to codes and legislation impacting interior designers.

We also make updates if we receive multiple requests from customers and clients to add more specific information on a topic, or in response to a particular issue that has arisen, so we can save you from making the same mistake. You'll have access to all future updates when you purchase now while locking in at today's price.

We’re committed to providing the most relevant, accurate, and useful information and guidance as possible. You, your business, and your clients deserve the very best—and we’re dedicated to providing just that!

  • You can do anything you want, and that’s the beauty of having your own business. (Am I right?)

That said, if you don’t set up your business legally, or don’t have a process for collecting payment, or don’t use contracts with your “clients,” you won’t actually have a business; you’ll have a hobby—-and it’ll likely be a stressful and expensive one at that.

Trust me, the cost of not investing in setting your business up the proper way is far more than the time it takes to go through Design Business Foundations. We’ve worked with tons of designers who came to us to undo the mess of starting a business without these core principles in place.. If you were to ask them, they’d say it’s 100% worth finding the time.

However, if you’re already actively working with clients and have your business set up, then you may be a better fit for our Designed to Scale Method program.

  • We know you have options, and we’re honored you’re here! If you’re on our weekly email list, have ever attended a workshop or webinar we’ve hosted, or you’re a present or previous client, you know my business motto is to GIVE and GIVE GENEROUSLY. And when I create products to help the interior design industry, my team and I devote endless time, energy, and financial resources to ensure they’re perfect.

And remember, you’ll have six weeks of access to my team that includes a college professor who is formally trained in interior design and previously ran her own firm.

Our resources and advice combine what you would learn in a business or entrepreneurship course with what you would learn working in a design office—and we help you to avoid the mistakes many of our 6- and 7-figure designers hire us to fix.

In addition to that, I’ve drawn from my personal experience owning two companies and managing the operations of a 250-person company while single-handedly launching and running a subsidiary company for the CEO. My recent work over the last six years with interior designers, architects, and general contractors has allowed me to create templates and resources to support the various business models and team structures we’ve helped our clients streamline.

My company has helped over 100+ designers through our 1:1 services and has aided thousands more through our workshops, happy hours, and by teaming up with top names in the industry for webinars and educational experiences, so we’ve seen A LOT. With Dakota Design Company, you have the reassurance that our products are based on tried and true industry best practices (not theory that doesn’t hold up in a busy design office OR something that worked one time for one business).

We’ve also worked with clients who have done it all — the courses, coaching, and training — and they’ve said our products, depth of knowledge, generosity, and customer service are superior to anything they’ve experienced.

Our hope is that we can save you from costly future investments that don’t actually serve your company.

  • Once you join, you’ll have access to me and my team for 6 weeks. You can access the support and advice from me and my team during our weekly email Office Hours.

Office Hours are held every Friday from 10-3 CST. As long as you email us your question before Friday, you can expect a personal email response from me and/or my team each Friday. It’s that simple. No calls to fit into your schedule—just personalized answers and advice delivered straight to your inbox. However, if we ever decide to offer coworking sessions or group calls, that will be in addition to the Office Hours.

Everything is private (no other designers will see your email). So you can ask away without judgment. We’ve seen it all, so no reason to feel hesitant to ask us about any questions you have as you work through each lesson. We’re here for you.

  • This program was specifically created with interior designers and the design industry in mind. That said, if you are an interior designer turned business coach or strategist or consultant for interior designers or any type of business coach or service provider for interior designers, this will not be a good fit for you.

Please email katie@dakotadesigncompany.com to inquire about pricing and availability of our certification and licensing program
